What Is Get Lippy?
In 2023, a YouGov survey found that only 5% of people had a good understanding of gynaecological cancers and their symptoms. The annual taboo-busting Get Lippy campaign helps to raise awareness of these cancers and encourages positive, open, and potentially life-saving conversations.
Each year, there are more than 22,050 new cases of gynaecological cancer in the UK – equating to about 60 diagnoses each day. Early diagnosis makes all the difference to the outcome for people when it comes to cancer – the Get Lippy campaign helps to spread the word around early symptoms and breaks down stigma around gynae health, encouraging more people to seek advice and regular check-ups from their doctor.
How It Make a Difference?
Hear first-hand the impact of awareness from campaign ambassadors…
“Sadly, the reality is that there are many who are literally dying of embarrassment. Women’s and gynaecological health are often riddled with taboo and stigma – this contributes to many not seeking help early, which leads to late diagnoses and poorer outcomes. I fully support this [Get Lippy] campaign because it is a matter of life and death. It’s crucially important – we need to keep having these conversations, destigmatising them, educating and encouraging more women to come forward when they have symptoms, pushing for change and saving thousands of lives in the process.” -Dr Aziza Sesay, GP
“Awareness of the signs and symptoms of gynaecological cancer can be lifesaving, which is why I’m devoted to educating everyone and anyone about them. Being able to talk about them to friends and family, sometimes we need prompting from those around us to take our symptoms seriously, and you should never feel embarrassed to bring these up in a medical consultation. Thankfully, many of the ‘red flag’ symptoms are not cancer, but even if they aren’t, they can still have a huge impact on your quality of life – you deserve to be taken seriously and have the appropriate investigations and treatment initiated.” – Dr Anita Mitra, Gynaecologist and Author of Dealing with Problem Periods.
“For years, my bleeding was getting heavier and heavier, even whilst I was on the pill. It took me a long time to realise something wasn’t right – until I was using tampons and pads to keep it at bay, it just built up so gradually. The GP kept changing my pill and saying it wasn’t anything to worry about. It was only after I was found to be severely anaemic that they started to investigate what was going on – by then, I had two small tumours and needed a hysterectomy to treat my womb cancer. Please, get any abnormal bleeding checked, it could save your life. If you feel it isn’t being taken seriously, do try again and again – however long it takes to get it checked.” – Lydia Brain, diagnosed with womb cancer at 24
